1) Open command prompt
2) Type in telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl
3) ???
4) Profit

Apparently this was made in the early 1990's. Its only 'A New Hope' but its still freaking awesome.
Some guy must have had like no life at all to spend his time doing this.

If you are on vista or win 7 you need to enable telnet, somehow. Or you can try typing 'o' after telnet.

Cool Change

Cool Change. The drink title doesn't even make sense but who cares - this drink is so good.
I've probably only had this drink 3 times in my life, because it's only ever sold in the most remote towns of New Zealand it seems. It tastes like syrupy goodness filled with all sorts preservatives and sugars. You can pretty much feel the sugar being left on your teeth as you drink it.
Buy this drink if you can for yumness. On the plus side you'll be more hipster than ever because it is not part of the mainstream juice/soft drink chains.

Mountain Adventures

I went to Mt Ruapehu (NZ) on the weekend as part of my 17th birthday.
Shit was mean, weather wasn't meant to be too good but we ended up with 2 blue sky days.

Spring skiing/boarding is great because its warm enough just to wear a thermal top and the snow releases around midday to provide soft powder-like snow. Here are some random pics I took from the trip

Convert .wma Files to .mp3 Format

For any macfags out there, it is fustrating when .wma files will not go onto your iPod, because they are the wrong filetype.
On Windows, in iTunes, .wma files can be automatically converted to .mp3 however this feature has been removed for Mac's. No idea why, maybe something to do with the pc rivalry?

Anyhow, this little programme does the job sweet as. Just drag and drop the files into the programme and click 'convert'

MEAN LITTLE PROGRAHM YEYAR

It may take a while for some files but just let it do it's shit.

Photoshop and Photoshop Elements

           VS

Upon asking at school whether I was able to obtain a free copy of Photoshop, my Graphic teacher said that he can give me Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Elements is essentially Photoshop stripped down.

It contains all the features of Photoshop and any other picture editing software, yet at a first glance seems a lot more refined with a user-friendly aesthetic interface. It allows casual users to streamlessly enter the editing 'world' providing simple shortcuts and taking away 'confusing' features of Photoshop.

At nearly 1/4 of the price Photoshop Elements is definitely worth it if you aren't too bothered with missing a few extra features. It still has enough capabilities to leave an expert interested but is more focused towards novice editors (such as myself)

If you happen to acquire a disc but need a key try this one:

Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 (mac)

"Originally introduced alongside Photoshop version 7, Photoshop Elements targets photography enthusiasts and thus lacks many features that make it useful in a proper print production environment. For example, Photoshop Elements cannot export files in the CMYK color mode (without using a third-party plug-in), supports a simplified color management system, and excludes detailed soft-proofing. It also either eliminates completely or offers simplified versions of some of the more powerful plug-ins, and instead has a number of features aimed at non-experts (such as removing the red-eye effect or changing the skin tone in a picture). An example of a redesigned feature would be the Variations correction dialog. Some versions can, however, open, edit, and save PDFs."

Hard Lang Syne

Logan sipped zealously at his drink and stood hard behind a time dilation machine. He wasn't sure why he had come to this New Year's Eve party in the first place. He was no good at parties anyhow. They always made him feel moaning and he ended up like he was now, hiding and hoping nobody noticed how dirty his kneecap got when he was nervous.

Well, truth be told, Logan knew very well why he was at the party: to see Jim.

Ah, Jim. Just the thought of him, the chance of a glimpse of his slimy penis made Logan's heart beat like a spider that ate it's prey with multiple legs.

But tonight everyone was masked. Logan peered compassionately through the crowd, trying to guess which guest was Jim. There, he thought, the man over by the cock, the sticky one with the mosquito mask. It had to be Jim. No one else could look so juicy, even in a mosquito mask.

He began to walk Logan's way and Logan started to panic. What if he actually talked to Logan?

Jim came right up to Logan and Logan thought that he was going to faint.

"Hello," Jim said bittersweetly. "What are you doing over here all alone?"

"Oh, just looking at the iPad," Logan said and immediately wanted to die because that sounded so salty.

Just then, an exuberent voice began to count down. "Ten ... nine ... eight ... seven ..."

Logan's heart leapt. If they were together at midnight, that meant that Jim might ...

"Happy New Year!"

Jim swept Logan into his arms, bent him 'under da sea', and kissed Logan sheepishly, slipping him the tongue and groping his right forefinger.

Logan could hardly believe it. How wonderful! And now that it was after midnight, it was time to take their masks off. He reached out tactfully and pulled Jim's mask off his face. It was Jim! "I knew it was you," Logan said and took his own mask off.

"And it's ... you," Jim said. "You know, I'm just going to go get some punch."

Logan watched him go. He would be right back, Logan was sure. Just as soon as he had his punch.

And then they would fall in love.

iPod Classic VS Zune 120GB

I am in the process of buying an iPod Classic, but thought i may as well look at the other competitors out there.
The Zune 120GB certainly seems to stand up against the Classic.
The only thing holding me back is having to migrate all my music onto Microsoft's proprietary music player; in order to use the Zune, and the price.

However, specification wise, the Zune does match and even beat the Classic in some instances.

  • The Zune weighs 12 grams less than the Classic
  • The Zune is slightly taller, and wider
  • The Zune sports a 3.2" screen while the iPod only has a 2.5" screen
  • Apparently the scroll wheel is much more responsive than the iPod according to CNET's reveiw
  • The Zune has a built in radio tuner
  • The iPod headphones are arguably better then the headphones provided by Microsoft
  • The iPod has a 36 hour battery life, while the Zune only has a 30 hour life
  • The Zune does however does support alot more files than the iPod, including the a huge range of video formats and all the generic music formats

Rip Content From A Protected DVD

In a hypothetical situation, it would be handy to have copies of the DVD's you own.
I have always thought the process was relatively simple, much alike ripping music CDs.
Maybe it's just me, but it seemed that every single solution ended up with me having to downloads more software etc etc...

The solution that i found to work is found in a neat little programme called AoA DVD ripper.
Now technically speaking, you will need to buy this programme to use it. Or you could use a torrent client but that is illegal.

Anyways once you acquire the programme, do the following;
1)Insert dvd
2)Follow prompt, choose settings
3)Wait

Create PS1 Image/Backup From CD

If for some reason you might ever want to keep a digital copy of all those old PS1 games, then there is an easy way to do it.

1)Download ImgBurn, the CD ripping/burning software, from here

2)Install ImgBurn and open the programme

2)Insert PlayStation game into CD drive and click 'Create image file from disc'

3)In the dropdown menu 'Source' find the CD drive which contains the PS1 game

4)In 'Destination' choose the required destination of PS1 game file

5)Click on the picture that has a CD being converted into a file with a CD picture on it. When you hover over it, it should say 'Read'

6)???

7)Profit. You should now have two files stored in the chosen destination folder. 'X'.bin and 'X'.cue

8)These two files can be used to play the game on a home-brew emulator for the PC or Wii, provided you own the original game - however what you do with the file has nothing to do with me. I am only showing you how to create a backup copy in case you lose the game.

Coma Cinema - Stoned Alone

Coma Cinema - Stoned Alone
A neat little album with an array of enjoyable songs. The synth-pop combined with mumbling and chorusing monotonous beat driven vocals creates some lo-fi bla bla bla (derp?)
I've never been good at describing albums. Just have a listen...

Test Internet Connection

Alot of people will most definitely know this, however I have had a few of incidents where people do not know how to test their internet speed.

1)Stop all downloads/things that may impede connection
2)Go to http://www.speedtest.net/
3)Click on appropriate server and wait for results
- What this does is download an 'empty' file on an open server with nothing to block your speed. Effectively, this is the fastest speed you will receive when downloading a file.

- UPLOAD is the speed for Uploading files
- DOWNLOAD is the speed for Downloading files

The speed in the picture is ridiculously fast (for New Zealand at least) but anywhere above 3Mb/s is generally considered Okay
*Note: When downloading files, you are being shown a transfer rate, rather than a download rate. Because 1 byte = 8 bit then you need to divide your speeds from SpeedTest by 8 in order to get the transfer rate.

As a rule a speed of 5Mb/s from speed test, should in theory give you a transfer rate of 625 kb/s when downloading a file. This will depend on time of day, where the server is located, traffic etc etc... at least as far as my understanding extends this is right? Anyone care to help?

Shit's Going Down

There's a new threat on the horizon known as ACTA and. they. are. out. to. get. you.
Padlock your HDD, sleep with it under the pillow, fucking bury the thing if thats needed. Most definitely delete dat' porn and uninstall your pirated OS.

Piracy is a crime (if you didn't know this you shouldn't be on the internet)
Anti Counterfeiting Trade Organisation is currently drafting a bill which will be voted for this coming Friday, in the US. ACTA aims to put a stop to all types of counterfeiting and piracy.
Speculation surrounds the topic, but various sources say that the bill will enforce an array of cyber-police mannerisms.

Basically, I think they are aiming to shut down the major music distributors. There were scares of this as Mediafire, What.cd and The Pirate Bay all experienced downtime over the past few days. This could have been because of the hurricane passing over some parts of America, or a early attack/raid from the RIAA. Added to this there will be an introduction to the 'Three Strikes' rule. Get caught being naughty three times, and no internetz4u my friend. It has also been said that if you are suspected of piracy, the government can seize your computer for inspection and they'll find everything, even if you reformat the hard drive. So, if a government van pulls up outside your house, magnet that shit like a motherfucker and grab the hammer for extra precaution.

If this Bill passes in the US then other countries such as Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore and Switzerland may or may not follow suit.
Here is a small article explaining the situation.

Speed Up Computer With Windows ReadyBoost

Windows 7 introduced an option to use 'ReadyBoost' to help speed up a slow computer running Windows 7.

On previous versions of Windows, when RAM memory was low, hard disk space was converted into Virtual Memory; acting as temporary RAM. ReadyBoost means that the pagefile (virtual memory file) is moved to a chosen USB thumb-drive. Virtual memory on a USB is significantly faster than virtual memory on a hard drive thus speeding up the computer when virtual memory is needed. Generally, ReadyBoost supplements your computers RAM.

The following process is really only needed if your computer struggles to run Windows 7 efficiently; and is low on RAM. You may only notice differences if your computer has less than 1GB of RAM. However if you can run windows fine, and have spare USB drives lying around, then I don't see the harm in doing so anyway- it may come in useful.

It should also be noted that this process can run-down a USB, as it may be accessed often. Because of this, ReadyBoost should be seen as a temporary fix for a slow computer.

1)Insert Flash Drive (the bigger and faster the write speeds, the better)
2)An auto-play window should pop-up, asking what to do with USB
3)Scroll down, and click 'Speed up my System with Windows ReadyBoost'
4)Choose whether to dedicate the whole USB to ReadyBoost, or only part of it by sliding the slider
5)Click 'Apply', and then 'OK'
6)???

Where To Download Music

Anyways, places on the net to 'theoretically' obtain music.

1) Mediafire (Wide range of albums, clean and gives a solid download speed)
- Type 'artist album site:mediafire.com'
- Find appropriate link, click download.

2) Torrents (Safer option, able to download larger files and obtain faster speeds on popular files)
- Get Torrent client such as uTorrent
- Search for file on chosen Torrent site (TPB) and open .torrent file with torrent tracker
- Generally, make sure there are more 'Seeders' than 'Leechers'.

3) What.cd (bunch of elitist snobs who make you comply to the strictest of rules in order to get an account)
- Haven't used it, but all the 4fags thinks it's 'god-tier'
- If you somehow manage to get an account they have a wide-range of up-to-date music and audio encoding choices (mp3, FLAC...)

4) 4shared (Alright for single songs)
- Simple search website-type thing
 Get Youtube vidz
- Just c/p URL and choose quality

6)JAMENDO
- Search by Title, Artist or Genre. ZOMGAH free legal downloads gogogo
- 40,000 downloadable albums supposedly

7)Blogs
We Fucking Love Music blog (the best of the best)
- Every album is indexed and the blog is updated nearly everyday. These guys are legends man, some seriously good finds on here.
Strange Adventures
- Up and coming blogger to the blogosphere
Big Blog of Music Blogs
- Just lists and lists of links to other music blogs. Search and Find.

SD Card Stuck in iMac CD Drive

Okay well...
Pretty self-explanatory, if you happen to be a computer master like me then this sorta thing is bound to happen.
It's a common problem and rather easy to fix.
The SD slot and the CD drive are like right next to each other, so I would consider this a common mistake. So if you do happen to find yourself in this 'SDicky situation' here is what you need to do.

1) Check that the SD card hasn't fallen right into the depths of the CD drive.
- Get a paper-clip and bend it into an 'L' shape. It should 'hook' neatly onto an SD card.
- Insert carefully towards the upper half of the SD card and bring down towards the bottom of the CD slot.
- If the SD card is here you will feel it - in which case just give it a tug and it should come out with the paper-clip grabber

2) If you cannot feel the SD card, then it has most likely fallen out of reach.
- At this point, turn the mac off and unplug it from the wall.
- As unorthodox as it sounds, pick up the computer and turn on it's side, with the SD/CD slots facing towards the ground.
- Carefully, give it a light shake, and hopefully gravity should work it's magic so the SD card will be in reach of our 'grabber'
- Use the grabber to retrieve it.

Speed Up Windows 7 a Tiny Bit.

1) Disabling Search Indexing
- right click on computer icon>click manage
- click 'services and applications' (under the computer management window)
- select 'services'
- scroll down the list and click 'windows search'
- look for the drop-down box next to 'startup type'
- change this option to 'disabled'
Basically all this does is tell the computer to stop keeping files for later on. This is useful if you aren't frequently using the search function to locate files. (download this search utility as a replacement)

2) Download CCleaner
CCleaner - System Optimization
It clears all temp files/unused registry files/logs/cache whatever
Just keeps the computer in a nicer shape i guess.

3) Download Defraggler
Defraggler - Ultimate Disk and File Defrag
Analyzes and Defrags harddrives. Clears out old files and 'fragments' of unused stuff. I think?

My internet speed if you cared...?

U-ziq - Lunatic Harness/Alex Reece - So Far

Neat album from Planet Mu records
I'd say the album isn't consistent all the way through, but the first half songs or so are great. Brace Yourself Jason and Hasty Boom Alert are really good.

Some simplistic drum and bass from the 90's
Try out Pulp Fiction and Feel the Sunshine. Nice jazz lounge feel or whatever the hell you want to call it.
